Stein, Gertrude
(1874–1946)
   US writer. Gertrude Stein came from a wealthy German Jewish family in Pennsylvania. She was educated in Europe and in 1902 settled in Paris with her brother Leo, an artist and art critic. She wrote novels, sketches, plays, poems and autobiographical works, and attracted attention by her experiments in rhythms (‘a rose is a rose is a rose’) and early use of the ‘stream of consciousness’ technique. She is best remembered as friend and patron of gifted men who were breaking new ground in the arts and were to become famous. Her home was an avant garde salon where artists like Picasso (who painted her portrait), Braque and Matisse mingled with American writers like F.Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. These years are described in The Autobiography of Alice B.Toklas (1933), ostensibly by her companion and secretary.
