Smilansky, Moshe
(1874–1953)
   Israel farmer and writer. Smilansky was born into a family of Jewish farmers in the Ukraine. He settled in Palestine at the age of sixteen and acquired orange plantations near Rehovot which prospered. Smilansky became a leader of the private ‘capitalist’ farmers’ federation, opposed the Jewish labour movement’s policy of ‘Hebrew labour’ and insisted on his right to employ Arab workers, thereby earning much unpopularity in the yishuv.
   Smilansky considered himself a disciple of AHAD HA-AM. He was a prolific writer of fiction and journalism, and the historian of agricultural settlement in Palestine. Among his works are stories depicting Arab village life written under the pseudonym Hawaja Mussa. Smilansky always believed in the possibility of Arab - Jewish reconciliation. He supported the bi-national movement in the later years of the mandate, and opposed the struggle against the British in the 1940s.
