Shapira, Abraham
(1870–1965)
   Palestine shomer (‘watchman’). Shapira was one of the almost legendary heroes of the First Aliyah. Having earned a reputation for bravery, he was made head of the shomrim guarding Petah Tikvah in 1890. His subordinates consisted of both Jews and Bedouin. During World War I he was drafted into the Turkish army. In May 1921 he led the defence of Petah Tikvah against an Arab attack.
