Seymour, David (Chim)

Seymour, David (Chim)
(1911–56)
US photographer. Chim, as he was always known, was an international news photographer of the first rank. The son of a Warsaw publisher of Hebrew and Yiddish books, he studied photography in Leipzig, and first became famous through his coverage of the Spanish Civil War. He served with the US Air Force in World War II, and later joined Robert CAP A and Cartier-Bresson in Paris to form Magnum Photos, which became the leading international agency. Chim had a deep affinity for children, and carried out a special assignment for UNESCO, photographing children in the war-ravaged areas of Europe. He did a number of picture stories for Life magazine, including the first shots of the head of Nefertiti, after its recovery from the salt mines where the Nazis had hidden it. Chim visited Israel several times, and was killed while covering the 1956 Sinai Campaign.
