Schwartz, Maurice
(1890–1960)
   Yiddish actor. Ukrainian-born Maurice Schwartz became the leading figure on the New York Yiddish stage during its heyday in Second Avenue, when a score of shows might be performing nightly. In 1918 he founded the Jewish Art Theatre, which was a nursery for young talent and toured many countries. Schwartz had a commanding stage presence, and the full-blooded and flamboyant style that delighted an earlier generation. The huge repertoire of his company included not only original Yiddish works, but Yiddish translations of Shakespeare, Shaw and other world dramatists. Probably his best- known roles were Shylock and King Lear. With the fading out of the Yiddish theatre in New York and the demise of his own company, Schwartz went to Israel in 1960 to start production there, but died shortly after.
