Scholem, Gershom Gerhard
(1897–1982)
   Historian and student of Jewish mysticism. Scholem, born in Germany, was professor of Jewish mysticism and the Cabbala at the Hebrew University from 1933–65 and was widely regarded as the world’s leading authority on the subject. His best-known book was Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism (1941, 1954, 1965), and he also wrote a major work on the SHABBETAI ZEVI movement. From 1968 Scholem was president of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
