(1891–1971)
US industrialist. As a boy Sarnoff was brought to the United States from Russia. He worked as a self-taught telegraphist for the Marconi Telegraph Company, and picked up the last wireless message from the sinking Titanic in 1912. He became an executive, then head, of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), which he built up into the world’s greatest electronics complex. Under his direction, RCA popularized television and then pioneered colour television. It acquired the National Broadcasting Company as a subsidiary.
