Roth, Leon
(1896–1963)
   British philosopher. Leon, brother of Cecil ROTH, held the chair of philosophy at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, from 1927–51, when he resigned and returned to England. He was responsible for the programme of translating philosophic works into Hebrew. He was especially well known for his writings on MAIMONIDES and SPINOZA. Roth was elected a fellow of the British Academy and wrote Jewish Thought as a Factor in Civilization (1954) in a UNESCO series. His main work was Judaism, a Portrait (1960).
