Rosenberg, Julius
(1918–53); Ethel (1920–53)
   US couple convicted as spies. In 1951, worldwide controversy was aroused by the conviction of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg on a charge of obtaining atomic secrets for the Russians, and the death sentence passed on them. The sentence was carried out after an unsuccessful legal battle to get a stay. They were the first civilians in American history to be executed for espionage.
