Nathan of Gaza
(1643/4–80)
   Sup-porter of SHABBETAI ZEVI. Nathan was born in Jerusalem and went to live in the house of his father-in-law in Gaza, where he studied the Cabbala. He met Shabbetai Zevi and, claiming to act on a vision, proclaimed him the Messiah with himself in the role of prophet. Even after Shabbetai’s conversion to Islam, Nathan continued to believe in him and to travel among groups of supporters in the eastern Mediterranean. It was Nathan who assembled the Shabbatean teachings into a coherent system. His mystical works circulated secretly in Shabbatean circles for centuries after his death.
