Meyerhof, Otto Fritz
(1884–1951)
   German biochemist and Nobel laureate, 1923. Meyerhof was professor of physiological chemistry at the University of Kiel where he concentrated upon his investigations of the muscle. He shared the 1923 Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for his work, which was the basis for subsequent discoveries of the processes by which glycogen is converted to lactic acid in a working muscle. Meyerhof was forced to flee in 1938 and he became research professor of physiological chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania.
