Luxemburg, Rosa

Luxemburg, Rosa
(1871–1919)
Polish-German revolutionary. The daughter of a Polish Jewish merchant, Rosa Luxemburg was physically a cripple and barely five feet tall, but had great energy and a fiery personality. After studying in Switzerland, she became a leader of the Polish and Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, and worked for the overthrow of the czarist regime. She became a German citizen by marriage, and she and Karl Liebknecht became the leaders of the militant left wing of the German party. In the autumn of 1914, after the outbreak of World War I, they split from the Social Democratic Party to form the more extreme Spartacus League. She was in prison for most of the war period, and freed at the end of 1918 when revolution had broken out in Germany. She immediately helped transform the Spartacus League into the German Communist Party. Two weeks later, she and Liebknecht were arrested, and murdered by army officers while they were being taken to prison.
