Lieberman, Saul
(1898–1983)
   Talmudic scholar. Lieberman emigrated to Palestine from Russia in 1928, and taught at the Hebrew University until 1940, when he joined the faculty of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. He was renowned in particular for his work on the Jerusalem Talmud and the Tosefta (teachings of the tannaim), and on the Hellenic influence in Palestine in the talmudic period. In 1971 he was awarded the Israel Prize for Jewish Studies.
