Lemkin, Raphael
(1901–59)
   Author of genocide convention. A Polish lawyer, Lemkin had most of his family killed by the Nazis in World War II. He escaped and reached the United States where he campaigned for an international convention on genocide, a term he coined for the destruction of a people. The convention was adopted by the United Nations in December 1948, and has since been ratified by nearly eighty countries.
