- Landsteiner, Karl
- (1868–1943)US scientist and Nobel laureate, 1930. Karl Landsteiner was born and educated in Vienna. While working in the Pathology Institute of Vienna University in 1900, he made his basic discovery relating to the different types of human blood, and by 1902. had established the four blood groups, A, B, AB, and O, together with definitive methods of blood- typing. Further research established that these blood groups were inherited, which was significant for various biological and anthropological studies. In 1922 he was invited to join the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York, where he remained until his death. In 1927 his group discovered additional blood group factors, M, N and MN. In 1940, he was involved in the discovery of the Rhesus factor. Landsteiner was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 1930 for his work on blood groups and typing. His most important book was The Specifi-city of Seriological Reactions (1936).
