Kármán, Theodore Von
(1881–1963)
   Aerodynamics expert. In 1930, Von Kármán emigrated to the United States from his native Hungary and took up a teaching and research post at the California Institute of Technology in his field of aerodynamics. His work had a major influence on the development of super- sonic aircraft and rockets. In World War II he was put in charge of American jet- propulsion research, and in 1951 was appointed chairman of the Aeronautical Research and Development Committee of NATO.
