Kahn, Zadoc

Kahn, Zadoc
(1839–1905)
Chief rabbi of France. Kahn became the last chief rabbi of France in 1889. During the DREYFUS Affair he tried unsuccessfully to get the ultra-conservative leaders of the community to come out in support of Dreyfus. He was sympathetic to Jewish settlement in Palestine but opposed to the idea of a Jewish state and stressed the patriotism of French Jews. In 1880 Kahn was one of the founder-members of the Society of Jewish Studies and became its president. It issued an important publication, Revue des Etudes Juives.
