Julius Caesar
(c. 100–44 BC)
   Roman leader. In the Roman civil war, Julius Caesar defeated his rival Pompey at the battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC, thus gaining control of Syrian Palestine. The Judean ruler HYRCANUS II and his chief adviser ANTIPATER then shifted their allegiance from Pompey to Caesar and were able to give him assistance in his Egyptian campaign. Caesar ratified Hyrcanus II as high priest and ethnarch, restored the territories previously taken from Judea by Pompey, and allowed the walls of Jerusalem to be rebuilt. His policies were benevolent to the Jews in Judea and to the Jewish communities in the Roman provinces elsewhere, who mourned his death in 44 BC.
