Israels, Jozef
(1824–1911)
Dutch painter. It was with his compassionate portrayal of the ordinary life of fishermen and peasants that Israels established his fame. In his treatment of landscapes, and his choice of Jewish topics, his work is reminiscent of Dutch painting of the 17 century. He was awarded the gold medal three times at Paris world exhibi-tions and his work is hung in many museums, notably the Amsterdam Academy and the Rijksmuseum. ISSERLES, Moses ben-Israel 1525 or 1530–72. Polish rabbi. An outstanding scholar, Isserles founded and directed a rabbinical academy in his native town, Cracow, and maintained it and its students out of his own pocket. His auth-ority as a scholar was widely recognized, He covered Jospeh CARO’S short legal codification, the Sephardi Shulchan Aruch (‘Prepared Table’), with an Ashkenazi Mapah (‘Tablecloth’). This book ensured the acceptance of the legal code by the European Jewish community. Isserles also wrote on philosophy and mysticism. His grave became a place of pilgrimage for Polish Jewry.
