Ionesco, Eugène

Ionesco, Eugène
(b. 1912)
Romanian-French playwright. The son of a Romanian non-Jewish father (who abandoned his family) and a French-Jewish mother, Ionesco achieved worldwide fame with a series of pungent plays, savagely mocking at bourgeois life and the fascist tendencies which were the background of his upbringing. Strongly influenced by KAFKA, he was regarded as the father of the Theatre of the Absurd, starting with The Bald Prima Donna (Fr. orig., 1949) and progressing through such classics as The Chairs (Fr. orig., 1951) and Rhinoceros (Fr. orig., 1959). His plays were published in four volumes (1954–66). In 1970 he was elected a member of the French Academy. After a visit to Israel in 1967, Ionesco publicly affirmed his Jewish origins in the second volume of his autobiography.
