Hillesum, Etty

Hillesum, Etty
(1914–43)
Dutch diarist. Hillesum was born in Middleburg and educated at Amsterdam University. During the German occupation of Holland she worked for the Jewish Council in Amsterdam and looked after people at the transit camp of Westerbok. As she was free to come and go, she was urged to save herself, but she was determined to share the fate of her fellow- Jews. During this period she kept a diary describing life in the camp. Selections from the diary were published in 1981 and letters from the same period in 1982. Together they give a vivid picture of Dutch Jewry in the Holocaust period. Hillesum died at Auschwitz.
