Halévy, Joseph
(1827–1917)
   Orientalist. Halévy grew up in Turkey and settled in Paris, where he became an authority on oriental and Semitic languages. In 1868 he went to Ethiopia, and studied the Falashas, or ‘Black Jews’, living there. He became convinced that they were of Jewish descent and gained financial support for them.
   He later travelled through Arabia disguised as a rabbi collecting alms, and did research on over six hundred Sabean and Minean inscriptions. Halévy lectured and wrote extensively on biblical texts and on ancient Mesopotamian languages, especially Sumerian, on which his views aroused much scholarly controversy. He produced poetry and prose in Hebrew and was a follower of the Lovers of Zion movement that preceded HERZL.
