Gershwin, George

Gershwin, George
(1898–1937)
US composer. George Gershwin was responsible for forming the jazz style into acceptable concert music. His Rhapsody in Blue (1924) was a landmark, as was American in Paris (1928). He wrote successful musical comedies and film scores and the enduring popularity of his work is best displayed in his last composition, an opera about American Negroes, Porgy and Bess (1935).
The lyrics for most of his works were written by his brother Ira (b. 1896).
