Franklin (Frumkin), Sidney

Franklin (Frumkin), Sidney
(b. 1903)
US bullfighter. As a Jewish youth from Brooklyn, Franklin achieved fame in the unlikely role of a professional matador. Starting at the age of eighteen, as a pupil of the most famous bullfighter in Mexico, he went on to a successful career in that country and Spain, where Ernest Hemingway became his friend and admirer. He served in the Spanish Civil War as a foreign correspondent. After retiring from the ring with a staggering tally of over five thousand bulls slain, he continued to be connected with the sport as a writer and commentator. His autobiography, published in 1952, carried the simple and apt title Bullfighter from Brooklyn.
