Franck, James

Franck, James
(1882–1964)
German physicist and Nobel laureate, 1925. A professor at the University of Gottingen, Franck collaborated with Gustave Hertz in the work on the structure of the atom that was to earn them the 1925 Nobel Prize in Physics.
After Hitler’s rise to power, Franck emigrated to the United States, taught at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Chicago, and continued his research into the structure of matter. During World War II he worked on the atom bomb project, but strongly opposed the dropping of the bomb on Japan. He proposed a United Nations ban on nuclear weapons, and together with like- minded scientists, accurately predicted the nuclear stalemate which would follow a failure to ban the bomb.
