Espinoza, Enrique

Espinoza, Enrique
(1898–1987)
Argentinian writer. Espinoza was born in Kishniev, but his family settled in the Argentine in 1905. He worked as an editor of various literary reviews and was a founder member of the Argentine Writers’ Association. His early works include collections of short stories, La Levita Gris (‘The Grey Frock-Coat’, 1924) and Ruth y Noemi (‘Ruth and Naomi’, 1934), both of which describe Jewish life in Buenos Aires. In 1935, Espinoza moved to Chile. He was committed to the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War and he wrote many essays and articles on Latin American literature and the place of Latin America in world affairs. Although highly assimilated, he was aware of and concerned with the problems of being part of a multi-cultural and multi- ethnic society. His best-known essay is perhaps El Angel y El Leon (‘The Angel and the Lion’), a discussion of the attraction of South American Jews to the works of Henrich HEINE and the difficulties of living in two worlds.
