Cowen, Sir Zelman
(b. 1919)
   Australian jurist. Cowen was born in Melbourne. After pursuing an academic career at the University of Melbourne, he became Vice-Chancellor first of the University of Queensland and then of the New England University in New South Wales. Subsequently he served as Governor-General of Australia from 1977–82 for which he was knighted. He was Provost of Oriel College, Oxford from 1982–90 and between 1988 and 1990 he was elected Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford. Cowen has been very involved in Jewish causes and was instrumental in organizing an exchange scheme between the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Sydney. He has been a governor of the Hebrew University and has served as the Chairman of the Van Leer foundation in Jerusalem.
