Burton, Sir Montague
(1885–1952)
   British industrialist. Born in Russia, Burton emigrated to Leeds. He was the founder of a large chain of clothing shops, and developed cheap, ready-made men’s clothes which brought good styling and finish within the reach of the working classes. He was also a pioneer of improved labour conditions in England. He founded chairs of industrial relations at Cambridge, Leeds and Cardiff, and endowed chairs of international relations at Oxford, London, Nottingham and Jerusalem at the Hebrew University. He was knighted in 1931.
