Bronfman, Samuel
(1890–1971)
   Canadian industrialist. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, Samuel joined his father in the hotel trade and then branched out into a successful mail-order liquor business. He went on to control one of the world’s largest distillers, Distillers-Seagram’s Ltd. He devoted himself to Jewish affairs and was president of the Canadian Jewish Congress for almost a quarter of a century and a vice-president of the World Jewish Congress. He was a generous benefactor to Canadian hospitals, universities and museums, both Jewish and non-Jewish. The headquarters of the Canadian Jewish Congress in Montreal was named after him. On his seventieth birthday his four children donated the Bronfman Biblical and Archaeology wing to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
