Berlin, Sir Isaiah
(b. 1909)
   British philosopher. Coming from Latvia as a boy, Isaiah Berlin was known as one of the most penetrating minds in British intellectual life and a brilliant and rapid talker. At Oxford University he was the first Jewish fellow of All Souls, professor of social and political theory and president of Wolfson College. During World War II, he was attached to the British foreign service and posted to New York, Washington and Moscow. Later he held visiting professorships at leading American universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Chicago and Brandeis. His published works concern philosophy, Marxist ideology and the place of liberty in social order, and include a study of Moses HESS. A keen Zionist, he was a close personal friend of Dr WEIZMANN and other Israel leaders, and a governor of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was knighted in 1957 and awarded the Order of Merit in 1971. In addition he won the Jerusalem Peace Prize in 1979. His works include Karl Marx: His Life and Environment (1939), Four Essays on Liberty (1969), Vico and Herder (1976), Against the Current (1979) and The Crooked Timber of Humanity (1990).
