Berenson (Valvrojenski), Bernard

Berenson (Valvrojenski), Bernard
(1865–1959)
Art historian. Brought to the United States from Lithuania as a child, Berenson studied at Harvard and Oxford, and settled in Florence, Italy, where he spent the rest of his life. His numerous books and articles made him the recognized world authority on Renaissance art. His best-known work was Italian Painters of the Renaissance (1930). For a long period, the noted art dealer Duveen sold Italian art works on the basis of Berenson’s certificates of genuineness. He bequeathed his villa and the art treasures in it to Harvard University.
Berenson was ambivalent about his Jewishness. He was baptized first as an Episcopalian and then converted to Catholicism. Later in life he was a pro- Zionist.
