Baeyer, Adolf von
(1835–1917)
   German organic chemist and Nobel laureate, 1905. Son of a Jewish mother, Baeyer was a professor of organic chemistry in Berlin. He discovered a synthetic indigo which led to the formation of the large German dyestuff industry. His work helped lay the foundation of organic chemistry for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1905.
