Asser, Tobias Michael Carel
(1838–1911)
   Dutch statesman and Nobel laureate 1911. Asser, who came from a noted family of Dutch jurists, was professor of international law at the University of Amsterdam (1862–93), a member of the Council of State in the Netherlands from 1893, and chairman of the Royal Commission on Private International Law in 1898. In 1900 he was appointed to the Hague Permanent Court of Arbitration and was responsible for a number of notable judgements. Asser shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1911.
