(1863–1920)
   Russian writer. An-Ski spent most of his life studying the folklore of the Russian peasant and of the Jewish shtetl. He drew on the material he gathered for stories and plays written in Russian and Yiddish. His fame rests on a single Yiddish play, The Dybbuk, first produced in 1920 and translated into many languages, including a Hebrew version by BIALIK. It became the best-known work in the repertoire of the Habimah theatre that was formed in Russia and later became the state theatre of Israel.
