Wertheimer, Samson
(1658–1724)
   Viennese court Jew. Wertheimer attended a yeshivah in Frankfurt, then was made the manager of Samuel OPPENHEIMER’S counting-house in Vienna. He helped administer the finances of successive emperors, Leopold I, Joseph I and Charles VI, and was appointed court factor on Oppenheimer’s death in 1703. He was also employed in diplomatic undertakings and financed the Treaty of Utrecht which ended the Spanish War of Succession in 1714. Wertheimer was the richest Jew in Germany, and known as ‘the Jewish emperor’. A deeply devout man, he was given by the emperor the honorary title of rabbi of Bohemia. He endowed synagogues in Nikolsburg and Eisenstadt,was in charge of the collection of donations for the Holy Land and helped to finance the printing of the Talmud in Frankfurt, begun in 1712.
