Alexander, Abraham, Sr.
(1743–1816)
   Early settler in the American colonies. As a young man Alexander emigrated from London to Charleston, South Carolina, where he served as a lay minister for the small Jewish congregation, compiling for them a Sephardi prayer book. After Charleston surrendered to British troops in 1780 during the American Revolution, Alexander escaped and became a lieutenant in a colonial regiment. After independence, he served in the new administration as a customs clerk and auditor.
   His second wife was a French Hugue-not widow who converted to Judaism and became strictly orthodox.
   Alexander was one of the founders and the first secretary-general of the Supreme Council, 33rd degree, Scottish Rite Masonry, which was founded in Charleston.
